House of Rock Int/Adv Camp: Soul of Rock
Ages: 13 - 18
Ability: Intermediate Advanced
Did you ever wonder where rock & roll really came from? Well we are going to explore those sonic avenues by celebrating the artists that brought the rhythm and blues elements of rock. There is one thing that is common in popular music, the origin of the groove. This camp will learn, rehearse and perform the music of a few of the most prolific African American artists of our time. From Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and Aretha Franklin to Lenny Kravitz, Fishbone and Bad Brains. We will focus on the feel of rock and the soulful side of the funk to help understand why the blues was the parent of our popular music. Let's learn how some people on the fringes of American society in the early 20th century could usher in a whole new way of expression through music. Long live the groove and soul of rock!
