Masters of Hawaiian Music

Based off the weekly Grammy Award winning concert series hosted by Hawaiian Renaissance man George Kahumoku Jr, the Masters of Hawaiian Music spotlights the slack-key guitar style and musical traditions the islands are famous for. Kahumoku is joined by masters Led Kaapana and Jeff Peterson among others. George and Jeff will be hosting workshops on March 18. More info and how to enroll.

Denver's own hula group Na 'Olapa Mamao E Malama Hula will add evocative hula to select songs by George Kahumoku Jr & Led Kaapana.

George Kahumoku Jr.

There's a reason he's been called Hawaii's Renaissance man: George Kahumoku Jr. is a multiple Grammy Award & Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning master slack key guitarist, songwriter, world-traveling performer, high school teacher, artist and sculptor, story-teller and writer, farmer and entrepreneur.

In February of 2006, George and fellow artists including Ledward Kaapana, Daniel Ho, Peter deAquino, and Garrett Probst were thrilled to receive the 48th Grammy Award for Best Hawaiian Album for their compilation recording, Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Vol. 1: Live in Concert from Maui. But George's Grammy fame doesn't stop there: The sequels to this recording, Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar: Live from Maui which included additional artists (Dennis Kamakahi, Martin Pahinui, and Richard Ho'opi'i) won the 49th Grammy and then in 2008, Treasures of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar won the 50th Grammy Award. All three recordings are compilations from George's weekly show, the prestigious Slack Key Show: Masters of Hawaiian Music located at the Napili Kai Beach Resort on Maui.

George is the musical host and features a different solo artist each week plus his regulars: nephews Peter deAquino & Garrett Probst AKA Da Ukulele Boyz, plus young guitarist, Sterling Seaton, and hula dancer, Wainani Kealoha. Started in 2003, his show is the first long-running concert hall setting for the great slack key and Hawaiian musicians of today.

Jeff Peterson

Recognized as one of Hawaii's most versatile musicians, Jeff Peterson is at the heart of the Hawaiian music scene today. His passion for the guitar has allowed him to shine as a solo artist and has given him the opportunity to collaborate with a wide variety of artists from Hawaii, across the US, and abroad. His focus on Slack Key guitar, classical, and jazz music has allowed him to develop a unique and transcendent voice on the guitar while being deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage.

Led Kaapana

ed Kaapana's mastery of stringed instruments, particularly slack key guitar, and his extraordinary baritone and leo ki`eki`e (falsetto) voices, have made him a musical legend. He has been thrilling audiences for more than 40 years. With easy-going style and kolohe (rascal) charm, he has built a loyal corps of Led Heads from Brussels to his birthplace on the Big Island of Hawaii. Recognition by his peers earned Led 4 Grammy nominations in his own right and 2 wins on slack key compilations.
