The Banjo: Playing Traditional Music, New and Old
Ages: 18 - No Limit
In this workshop, Dick Weissman and Stephen Wade will focus on the many musical roles that the banjo can play as a solo and accompanying instrument. This involves a mixture of picking styles that includes old-time two and three-finger styles, bluegrass, and clawhammer playing, as well as the variety of guitar-based techniques that Dick utilizes. We'll explore improvising, playing up the neck, alternative tunings, mixing picking styles within a single piece of music, and how to compose music for the banjo as a solo instrument and alongside other instruments, both stringed and wind. Discussion and demonstration also centers on how two banjos can play together, successfully and otherwise.
